The father\u2019s face changed.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat did you say?\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl was still shaking, her small hand locked around the boy\u2019s. Every breath seemed difficult, but she stayed on her feet.<\/p>\n

The boy looked down, suddenly afraid.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer mother,\u201d he said softly. \u201cShe asked me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The father went still.<\/p>\n

The crowd behind him disappeared into silence.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy wife died three years ago,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n

The boy nodded.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the pocket of his torn pants, he pulled out a folded photograph. The edges were worn. The paper was soft from being opened too many times.<\/p>\n

The father took it with trembling fingers.<\/p>\n

It was his wife.<\/p>\n

Sitting on a hospital bench beside the same barefoot boy.<\/p>\n

On the back, in handwriting he recognized instantly, were five words:<\/p>\n

Find my daughter. Make her believe.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The father\u2019s knees nearly gave out.<\/p>\n

The boy\u2019s voice broke.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe found me outside the hospital. I was hungry. She gave me food. Then she told me about a little girl in a pink dress who used to dance in the kitchen.\u201d<\/p>\n

The girl began to cry harder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember that,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n

The boy looked at her gently.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe said one day you would forget you were brave. And if I ever got invited into a room full of music, I should ask you one question.\u201d<\/p>\n

The father closed his eyes, tears slipping down his face.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you want to try?\u201d<\/p>\n

The boy nodded.<\/p>\n

The girl took one tiny step.<\/p>\n

Then another.<\/p>\n

Her legs trembled. Her breath shook. The boy held her like he was holding something more fragile than glass.<\/p>\n

The father covered his mouth and broke silently.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t a miracle.<\/p>\n

It wasn\u2019t magic.<\/p>\n

It was a child believing in another child before the world could tell them both no.<\/p>\n

And beneath the chandeliers, with the whole ballroom watching, the girl took her first dance step since losing her mother.<\/p>\n
