Ethan travels three weeks every month. Since his first wife died, his new wife Celeste had been taking care of his daughter Sophie while he was away.<\/div>\n

“She’s fine,” Celeste always said on the phone. “She’s eating. She’s fine.”<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
This time his meetings ended early. He changed his flight and didn’t tell anyone. He wanted to surprise his little girl with pancakes.<\/div>\n
He walked in at 8pm.<\/div>\n

Celeste was at the kitchen island in a silk blouse, cutting into a steak, a glass of red wine next to her plate.<\/div>\n
And on the floor, kneeling next to the family’s golden retriever, was Sophie.<\/div>\n
Two steel dog bowls. One for the dog. One for her.<\/div>\n
She was eating dry dog food with her bare hand. Wearing one of his old t-shirts as a dress. Hair not brushed in days.<\/div>\n
“Sophie?”<\/div>\n

Celeste jumped up with a big smile. “Oh! She’s playing puppy. It’s just a game!”<\/div>\n
Sophie looked up at him, crumbs on her lips, and whispered:<\/div>\n
“She said bad girls eat on the floor.”<\/div>\n
Ethan turned around slowly.<\/div>\n
Celeste’s smile was gone. She folded her arms.<\/div>\n
“Go ahead. Ask her who her real father is.”<\/div>\n
She told him she’d found his late wife’s old letters in the attic. That Sophie wasn’t his. That she belonged with her grandparents or at a boarding school. “Not in our house.”<\/div>\n
Ethan let her finish. Then he said quietly:<\/div>\n
“I know.”<\/div>\n

His wife had told him herself, before Sophie was born. She said she’d understand if he left.<\/div>\n
“I didn’t leave. I was in the room when she was born. I chose to be her father that night, and I’ve chosen it every day since. And I’m choosing it again right now.”<\/div>\n
He told Celeste to pack a bag. She threatened to call a lawyer. He said good, he’d be calling one too, and the first thing he’d show them was the little padlock on the pantry door.<\/div>\n
She left that night.<\/div>\n
Ethan sat down on the kitchen floor in his suit, pushed the bowl away, and pulled Sophie into his lap.<\/div>\n
“Am I still a bad girl?” she whispered.<\/div>\n
“You were never a bad girl. Not for one second.”<\/div>\n
He made pancakes at 9pm. She ate four. The dog got the last one.<\/div>\n
He doesn’t travel anymore. And Sophie has her own seat at the kitchen table now, right next to his.<\/div>\n
