One person who sat beside her after the accident, when doctors gave her numbers and pity instead of hope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The maid everyone ignored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The only friend who never did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat\u2019s her name?\u201d the woman asked, though her heart already knew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy\u2019s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaria.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman covered her mouth and let out a broken breath.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few guests looked at each other, confused, but she didn\u2019t see them. She only saw the child kneeling in front of her, with Maria\u2019s eyes and Maria\u2019s quiet courage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy reached into his pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper, worn soft at the edges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe died last month,\u201d he whispered. \u201cBefore she died, she told me to find you. She said if you ever stood again, I had to give you this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woman took the note with trembling hands.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside, in unsteady handwriting, were the words she had needed for years:<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were never weak. You were only afraid to live without guilt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her face collapsed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She sank back down, not into the wheelchair, but onto her knees in front of him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI looked for her,\u201d she cried softly. \u201cShe vanished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy nodded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe got sick. She didn\u2019t want you to see her like that.
