The actress behind one of cinema’s sharpest high school rebels now spends much of her morning under a duvet with a fountain pen. Her quiet withdrawal suited her, but the reason she embraced life as a recluse took years to reveal itself.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stockard Channing, 82, has built a London routine that sounds blissfully removed from premieres, publicity tours, and Hollywood small talk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Behind the strong coffee and leisurely mornings, however, is a\u00a0personal upheaval<\/strong>\u00a0involving\u00a0one out of the five<\/strong><\/i>\u00a0most important men in her life, which altered both where and how she wanted to live.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The London Routine She Built for Herself<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Stockard has lived in London since shortly before the COVID-19 pandemic. These days, her alarm gently wakes her at 7 a.m. with BBC Radio 3, though getting out of bed is another matter.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That decision belongs to Benny, her very large and elderly dog. Once he demands breakfast, Stockard feeds him and makes a strong pot of coffee. A dog walker then takes Benny outside, permitting Stockard to return to bed and even write in her diary. She considers that her\u00a0ideal morning<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Her next stop is usually Pilates and weight training. Still, she cheerfully admitted in\u00a0The Times<\/a>\u00a0in August 2026 that her favorite exercise days are the ones when she skips the whole business.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That lighthearted routine conceals the\u00a0painful reason\u00a0<\/strong>Stockard eventually wanted a smaller, more secluded life. The death of her longtime partner, producer and cinematographer\u00a0Dan Gillham<\/strong>, whom she called Daniel, affected her more deeply than she first understood.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cMy partner, Daniel, died in 2014 and it was more\u00a0devastating\u00a0<\/strong>than I realised; it had a lag effect,\u201d she said. The grief did not arrive in one clean, unmistakable wave. It settled in gradually, changing Stockard’s relationship with the home and habits she had once shared with Daniel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThe pattern of my life shifted, so I shifted my life from Maine.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\n

That realization ultimately carried her across the Atlantic. It also explains why her retreat was not simply an actress growing tired of Hollywood or searching for a picturesque European adventure.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stockard had lost the person who had been beside her for decades. Once that absence\u00a0caught up<\/strong>\u00a0with her, the structure of her old life no longer fit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stockard has lived alone since Daniel’s death, and she does not speak about solitude as\u00a0a problem<\/strong>\u00a0waiting to be solved. She has embraced it with the same blunt confidence that made several of her characters so memorable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI’ve lived alone since I lost Daniel and\u00a0I’m happy being a recluse<\/strong>. I was married four times before Daniel and they all represent epochs of me,\u201d she said. The word \u201crecluse\u201d might sound lonely coming from someone else, but Stockard makes it seem closer to a hard-earned privilege.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Her days contain very little celebrity theater. If she plans to leave the apartment, she combs her hair, but she is not standing before an enormous modern wardrobe trying to select a new designer look, although she does keep some amazing vintage outfits.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stockard acknowledged that actors usually care about their appearance, even though the job also requires them to let go of self-consciousness. She has never regarded herself as beautiful and has\u00a0little patience<\/strong>\u00a0for the machinery of celebrity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Her attitude is refreshingly simple: this is who she is, and people can take it or leave it. At 82, she sounds far more interested in living comfortably than auditioning for public approval.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Politics Gave Her Another Reason to Look Abroad<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

Stockard’s move to London also loosely coincided with her\u00a0disappointment\u00a0<\/strong>in the direction of American politics. For the woman who played first lady Abbey Bartlet on \u201cThe West Wing,\u201d the change felt especially stark.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

She began portraying Abbey in\u00a01999<\/strong>, shortly before the United States entered George W. Bush’s first administration. The cast had opportunities to observe Washington and found a level of thoughtful, principled discussion that Stockard believes is\u00a0missing\u00a0<\/strong>in 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Modern viewers, she said, now watch \u201cThe West Wing\u201d and marvel at fictional politicians who appeared to possess even a small measure of integrity. A series once praised for its idealism can now look almost like\u00a0a relic\u00a0<\/strong>from another political culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Abbey was never written as a ceremonial first lady content to stand quietly beside her husband. She was a physician, a formidable thinker, and a woman with no interest in indulging fools.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Stockard considers Abbey the character closest to her actual personality. Series creator Aaron Sorkin apparently reached the same conclusion. Aaron told Stockard that he had written Abbey around the qualities he saw in her.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

And it was exactly those characteristics that the men in her life saw and appreciated… at least while they could.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
