Mason’s grip tightened around the bucket. “Mom says a gentleman helps people and doesn’t make them feel small. Dad promised he’d do better today, but he wouldn’t help Mom. Then he yelled at her because she asked why he helped you.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Mason, that is enough,” Ryan snapped. “You don’t understand what you heard.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lauren rose slowly and removed her sunglasses. The perceptive eyes I had noticed earlier settled on Ryan without a trace of flirtation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lauren glanced at Mason.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“I think he understood perfectly.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ryan’s face went still.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Lauren glanced at Mason. “Company events like this tell me things I can’t learn in an office. I see how people behave when they think no one important is watching.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“Courtesy that depends on someone’s job title isn’t courtesy.” She looked down at Mason again. “Dumping water on people isn’t usually the answer, but standing up for someone matters. Your son seems to understand that.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I looked at Ryan’s dripping shirt, Lauren’s stern expression, and Mason’s anxious face. Then I took the bucket from my son, found a little water still sloshing at the bottom, and flicked it at his chest.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He gasped.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I think everyone needs to cool down.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Mason’s uncertainty broke into a grin. He raced toward the water, scooped up another bucketful, and chased me with it. Someone laughed; then one of Ryan’s coworkers splashed another, and within seconds, half the group was running toward the surf.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“An apology is a start.”<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Ryan found me at the water’s edge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I’m sorry,” he said. “You carried everything while I worried about impressing Lauren, and then I treated you like the problem.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t like what Mason saw today. I don’t much like what I saw, either.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

“I’ll do better.” He glanced toward Mason, who was charging at us with his bucket raised. “That kid’s becoming a real man.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

I shook my head. “A true gentleman.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Mason flung the water before Ryan could answer, soaking us both. Ryan sputtered, then lunged after him with a laugh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
