Daniel hurried after her, stopping a few feet away from the stroller.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know I made a terrible mistake. But you can’t throw away seven years because of one situation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily turned around slowly.<\/p>\n
\u201cOne situation?\u201d<\/p>\n
She pointed toward Vanessa, who remained near the airport windows.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou didn’t just kiss someone. You planned a future with her while telling me that you missed your family.\u201d<\/p>\n
Daniel lowered his head.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was confused.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd what about our children? Were you confused when you told Vanessa that you didn’t want your life tied down anymore?\u201d<\/p>\n
He had no answer.<\/p>\n
For a moment, Emily thought he might finally admit everything without making excuses.<\/p>\n
Instead, Daniel reached into his jacket and pulled out a small envelope.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was going to give you this when I got home.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily hesitated before taking it.<\/p>\n
Inside was a document describing a plan to purchase a house in another city. Daniel had apparently been considering moving there after returning from overseas.<\/p>\n
But Emily noticed something strange.<\/p>\n
The document had been prepared months earlier, and the proposed move included arrangements for Daniel to live separately from her.<\/p>\n
\u201cWere you planning to leave us?\u201d she asked.<\/p>\n
Daniel swallowed.<\/p>\n
\u201cI thought I could start over. I was going to make sure you and the babies had enough money.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily looked at him with disbelief.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou thought sending money would make it all right?\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cNo. I just wanted you to be safe.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cBeing safe isn’t the same as being loved.\u201d<\/p>\n
Her voice broke on the final word.<\/p>\n
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do love you.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily looked at him for a long moment.<\/p>\n
\u201cThen why did I have to discover the truth in an airport?\u201d<\/p>\n
He had no answer that could repair what he had done.<\/p>\n
Vanessa slowly approached them.<\/p>\n
\u201cEmily, I’m sorry,\u201d she said. \u201cI should never have let this happen. I believed his lies, but I knew he was married. I was wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily nodded, accepting that the apology had been offered without pretending it erased the damage.<\/p>\n
Then Daniel reached toward her hand.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlease. Give me one chance. I’ll end everything with Vanessa. I’ll come home. I’ll be the husband and father you deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily pulled her hand away gently.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou’re asking me to trust promises from the same man who spent months lying to me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI’ll prove it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n
She looked down at the twins.<\/p>\n
For a moment, she remembered the early years of their relationship: the tiny apartment, the late-night laughter, the dreams they had built together.<\/p>\n
She couldn’t erase those memories.<\/p>\n
But she couldn’t let them blind her to the truth, either.<\/p>\n
\u201cI need time,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Daniel’s face fell.<\/p>\n
\u201cDoes that mean we’re finished?\u201d<\/p>\n
Emily took a deep breath.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt means I won’t make a decision because you’re afraid of losing me. I’ll make it when I know what’s best for me and our children.\u201d<\/p>\n
She turned toward the airport exit.<\/p>\n
Daniel didn’t follow.<\/p>\n
For the first time, Emily wasn’t walking away because she was afraid of another argument.<\/p>\n
