He said he works for the Coast Guard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sarah looked at me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMegan. Photographs of me crying. Screenshots of things I typed at one in the morning during arguments. Do not respond to him publicly. Not one word, not one comment.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI haven\u2019t.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cGood. He called my office at seven this morning claiming you exposed your daughter to an inappropriate relationship during interstate travel.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI met the man on an airplane, Daniel.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019m aware. The claim is ridiculous. He\u2019s threatening to file for emergency temporary custody.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My knees went out and I had to sit down on Sarah\u2019s kitchen chair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan he do that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHe can file anything. Winning is an entirely different proposition.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clara started fussing and I shifted her up onto my hip.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s something else,\u201d<\/strong> Daniel said. <strong>\u201cJason claims the man in that photograph is connected to his family.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kitchen went very quiet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cConnected how?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHe wouldn\u2019t say. He said you staged the picture to humiliate him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat\u2019s insane.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI agree with you. But his reaction is disproportionate in a way I find interesting. Did Commander Reed mention Jason at any point?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHe didn\u2019t even know my last name.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least \u2014 I didn\u2019t think he did.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Thing I\u2019d Found Behind a Cabinet Three Years Earlier<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After I hung up I stood there not moving while Sarah paced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis isn\u2019t about you sleeping on some guy\u2019s shoulder.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI know.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMeg. Jason enjoyed control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I had seen him afraid exactly once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three years ago I was helping his mother rearrange photographs in her living room in Denver, and behind a cabinet I found a frame turned to the wall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason at about seventeen, standing at a marina beside another boy. Both of them in dark academy jackets. A narrow tower behind it, dark against the clouds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Where the lighthouse went dark.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two officers cleared the grounds first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The brass key opened a metal door at the base of the tower, and a staircase went down into the dark.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus went first with a flashlight. Photographs. A cassette tape. Patricia told me the truth tonight. Richard found out years ago and he\u2019s hated that boy every day since. Richard. Elliot. Marcus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jason.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And at the bottom, one more name that made no sense at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Clara.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A line ran from Jason down to Clara.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And another one \u2014 fainter, drawn and then partially erased \u2014 connected Clara to Marcus\u2019s father\u2019s side.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat is this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus read it over my shoulder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And his face changed in a way I have never been able to describe properly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It wasn\u2019t recognition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was shock.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Footsteps Above Us<\/h3>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before he could say a word, there were footsteps at the top of the stairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the officers shouted something.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then a heavy sound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then nothing at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcus killed the flashlight and pulled me down behind the machinery.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A beam swept the stairwell.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somebody came down slowly, one step at a time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMegan?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything in my body locked.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He sounded calm.
