“Where do you want the vanity?” Henry asked.<\/p>\n

Marissa considered the question.<\/p>\n

“Our apartment.”<\/p>\n

Her birthmark was right there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

So that evening, we loaded the vanity into Henry’s SUV and drove it over to Marissa and Graham’s apartment. Then all four of us wrestled it upstairs.<\/p>\n

Halfway through the doorway, Marissa snapped, “Dad, rotate it before you destroy the wall.”<\/p>\n

Henry froze.<\/p>\n

Marissa did too.<\/p>\n

Graham spoke around his toothbrush.<\/p>\n

“I’m brushing my teeth.”<\/p>\n

He flicked a drop of water at her.<\/p>\n

Marissa yelped.<\/p>\n

For one second, I almost stepped back inside.<\/p>\n

Old habit.<\/p>\n

Watch.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Protect.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Check.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Instead, I pulled the door closed.<\/p>\n

And left my daughter to tell me when she needed me.<\/p>\n
