Daniel Carter had spent five years trying to forget Emily Rose, the woman he once believed he would marry.
Their relationship had ended suddenly. One day, Emily disappeared from his life, leaving behind unanswered calls, unfinished promises, and a letter he never understood.
Then, one rainy evening, someone knocked on his front door.
Standing outside was a little girl with blonde hair, watery eyes, and a small wooden box clutched against her chest.
Daniel knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, where are your parents?”
The girl stared at him.
“Mommy said you would come back.”
Daniel froze.
“What did you say?”
She reached into her pocket and pulled out an old photograph. It showed Emily standing beside a younger Daniel, smiling beneath the sunlight.
On the back, someone had written four words:
“For our daughter, Lily.”
Daniel’s hands began to shake.
He had never known Emily was pregnant.
Before he could ask another question, Lily grabbed his hand.
“Daddy, please come with me. Mommy fell asleep, and she won’t wake up.”
Daniel looked at the little girl, then at the photograph.
He had a daughter.
And somehow, the woman he had lost five years ago was still waiting for him.
