Vice President JD Vance confirmed the news in an official social media announcement, sharing that baby Alec Neel Vance was born Sunday morning, July 19, 2026.
He expressed deep gratitude to the military doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and the White House Medical Unit. The healthy baby boy is already being doted on by his excited older siblings Ewan, 9; Vivek, 6; and Mirabel, 4.
According to a CBS News report, this is the first time in modern history a sitting vice president has welcomed a child. The last instance occurred 156 years ago in 1870.
That was when Vice President Schuyler Colfax Jr., serving under Ulysses S. Grant, and his wife Ellen welcomed their son, Schuyler Colfax III.

A Tragic Loss Leads to New Life
In his book “Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith,“ JD admitted that he spent years trying to persuade Usha to have a fourth child. She originally resisted because of the relentless attention surrounding their political elevation.
However, her perspective shifted following the tragic death of conservative figure Charlie Kirk last fall. After flying Charlie’s remains back home to Arizona, his grieving widow Erika spoke about wishing she had had more children with her late husband.

JD wrote, “Something changed for Usha, and not long after we buried my friend, she became pregnant with our fourth child, a boy. One life was stolen from us, but another was given.”
During a sit-down with “CBS Sunday Morning,“ Usha reflected on those comments, acknowledging that the conversation deeply affected both of them while they were already contemplating their future.

Leavitt and spouse Nicholas Riccio welcomed daughter Viviana on May 1, expanding their household alongside son Niko, who recently turned two. In a May 7 Instagram post, the press secretary shared her family’s excitement over their healthy newborn daughter.
Meanwhile, Homeland Security Adviser Stephen Miller, 40, and conservative podcaster Katie Miller, 34, recently celebrated their fourth birth. As detailed in People, Katie gave birth to son Hawthorne Hayes on June 3, officially announcing the news a week later.
The couple, who wed in early 2020 at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, previously revealed their pregnancy on New Year’s Eve at Mar-a-Lago. Hawthorne joins siblings Mackenzie, Jackson, and Hudson, all under age six.
On her Instagram page, Katie celebrated and recommended parenthood as a 10/10 life experience, joining siblings Mackenzie, 5; Jackson, 4; and Hudson, 2.

These individual milestones coincide with administration efforts to reverse national birth rate declines. According to ABC News, advisers are reviewing incentives like a $5,000 payment for new mothers, an idea Trump publicly backed.
Leavitt confirmed the administration’s goal is to champion policies that assist parents and protect children. Officials pointed to executive actions supporting IVF, aligning with Trump’s self-described focus on fertility support.
Vance has also championed financial relief for parents, advocating for a $5,000 child tax credit. Speaking at the March for Life in January, the Vice President argued that national prosperity should be measured by thriving households rather than economic statistics alone.

President Trump’s Unscripted Photo Scoop
While celebration greeted the historic arrival, the biggest viral surprise happened early Monday, July 20, 2026. Neither JD nor Usha Vance published the initial public image of their newborn son.
Instead, President Donald Trump scooped the family by posting the debut picture to his Truth Social page. The photo featured six-year-old Vivek cradling baby Alec while four-year-old sister Mirabel looked on.
