Chapter 11: The Call From the Woman Who Looked Like Olivia

Chapter 11: The Call From the Woman Who Looked Like Olivia

Nobody moved when the phone rang.

It sat on a desk in Victor’s private office, vibrating against a stack of medical records. The screen illuminated the dark room with the name of a woman whose identity had haunted our family for years.

Elise Cole.

Olivia stared at it.

“Answer it,” she whispered.

Detective Harris raised a hand.

“Let my team handle this.””

“No.”” Olivia stepped forward.

“If that’s my sister, I need to hear her voice.””

“Mrs. Cole, we don’t know who’s on the other end.””

“I know my sister.””

The phone rang again.

Harris nodded to an officer, who put the call on speaker and began recording.

“Hello?””

For several seconds, there was only breathing.

Then a woman’s voice emerged.

“Victor?””

Olivia closed her eyes.

“It’s me, Elise.””

Silence.

Then the voice sharpened.

“Olivia?””

“Where are you?””

A shaky laugh came through the speaker.

“You’re alive.””

“Answer me.””

“I thought you were dead.””

“You helped them take my baby.””

“I didn’t know!””

Olivia struck the desk with her palm.

“You signed the transfer papers!””

“I was told the baby needed special medical care. Richard promised she’d be returned to you.””

“You knew I was locked away.””

“I didn’t know where they were keeping you!””

Olivia’s voice broke.

“You stood beside my husband while he searched for me. You watched him grieve. You let him believe I had abandoned him.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“By pretending to be me?””

The line went silent.

I felt Olivia’s hand trembling beside mine.

“Elise,” she continued, “tell me where my daughter is.””

A long pause followed.

Then Elise whispered, “She’s closer than you think.””

The call ended.

Detective Harris immediately ordered officers to trace the number. Another team searched Victor’s office for additional records.

I turned to Olivia.

“Do you believe her?””

Olivia looked exhausted.

“I don’t know what I believe anymore.””

She sank into a chair, covering her face with both hands.

I knelt in front of her.

“Look at me.””

She lowered her hands.

“We’ll find the truth. Together.””

Her lips trembled.

“What if our daughter hates me?””

“Then we’ll tell her the truth. We’ll tell her you never stopped looking.””

“And what if she’s been told I abandoned her?””

I squeezed her hands.

“Then we’ll spend every day proving otherwise.””

For the first time since her return, Olivia leaned forward and rested her forehead against mine.

“I missed you,” she whispered.

“I missed you too.””

We stayed that way until Sophie approached us.

“Mommy?””

Olivia looked up.

Sophie stood a few feet away, holding Ruby’s hand.

“Are you really our mommy?””

Olivia opened her arms.

“If you want me to be.””

Sophie hesitated for only a moment before running into them.

Ruby followed.

Olivia wrapped both girls in her arms and began sobbing. I knelt beside them, holding all three, and for one fragile moment, the world seemed to stop trying to destroy us.

Then Ruby asked a question that changed everything.

“Mommy, why does the lady in the pictures look exactly like you?””

Olivia wiped her cheeks.

“Because she’s my sister.””

“Is she a bad person?””

Olivia looked toward the desk where Elise’s name had appeared.

“I don’t know, sweetheart.””

Ruby touched her necklace.

“She gave me this picture.””

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a folded photograph.

Olivia took it.

The image showed Elise standing outside a school, holding the hand of a little girl with chestnut hair and gray eyes.

The girl looked about five.

On the back was a handwritten message.

She doesn’t know who she is. Don’t let Richard find her.

Olivia’s hands began to shake.

“Where did you get this?””

Ruby looked at Rachel.

“Rachel put it in my backpack. She said it was important.””

Every eye turned toward Rachel.

She stood motionless near the doorway.

“Rachel,” Olivia said quietly, “what have you done?””

Rachel’s face crumpled.

“I was trying to protect her.””

“Protect whom?””

Rachel looked at Sophie.

Then Ruby.

Then Olivia.

“Your first daughter.””

The room fell silent.

I stood slowly.

“You know where she is?””

Rachel nodded.

“I’ve known for years.””

Olivia rose so quickly that her chair toppled backward.

“You knew my baby was alive, and you never told me?””

“I couldn’t!””

“Why?””

“Because Richard told me that if I revealed the truth, he’d have the child taken somewhere no one could find her. He said he’d destroy her identity and make sure you never saw her again.””

Olivia grabbed Rachel’s arm.

“Where is she?””

Rachel looked at Detective Harris.

“She’s living under another name. She’s twenty-three now. She has no idea that Olivia is her biological mother.””

Olivia staggered backward.

Twenty-three.

A grown woman, living somewhere in the world, believing her family history was something entirely different.

“What is her name?”” I asked.

Rachel shook her head.

“I can tell you where she works. I can show you the records. But I need protection first. Richard wasn’t the only person who wanted her hidden.””

Detective Harris stepped forward.

“We can arrange protection, but you need to tell us everything.””

Rachel nodded, wiping her face.

“I’ll tell you.””

Before she could continue, an officer entered the room carrying a newly recovered file.

“Detective, we found another document in the basement.””

Harris opened it.

His expression changed immediately.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He turned the page toward me.

It was a private adoption agreement dated twenty-three years earlier.

The names of the adoptive parents had been blacked out.

But the signature of the biological mother was clearly visible.

Olivia Cole.

Below it was a second signature.

Richard Cole.

And beneath both names, someone had written a sentence in red ink.

*THE CHILD MUST NEVER LEARN THAT HER FATHER IS ALSO HER GRANDFATHER.*

Olivia stared at the document.

Then she looked at me.

“My daughter wasn’t just taken from me,” she whispered.

“She was conceived using Richard’s genetic material.””

The room seemed to tilt.

Detective Harris closed the file.

“Mrs. Cole, there’s one more thing you should know.””

He hesitated.

“The woman who called us has been identified. Her phone is registered to a residence in Atlanta.””

Olivia grabbed his sleeve.

“Where?””

Harris looked at me.

“Your father’s old house.””

The house where I’d grown up.

The house that had stood empty since Richard’s death.

May you like

The house where every family secret had begun.

And according to the latest security footage, someone had entered it less than ten minutes ago.
