Chapter 8: The Witness From The Past

Chapter 8: The Witness From The Past

The hotel conference room was colder than it needed to be.

The air conditioning hummed above us.

A glass table separated everyone like a courtroom.

Daniel sat at one end.

Beside him was an older man wearing a gray suit.

I recognized him after a moment.

Richard.

Daniel’s former business partner.

I had met him only once during our marriage.

He had come to our apartment for dinner.

Back then, I remembered thinking he was arrogant.

Now, he looked tired.

Daniel stood when we entered.

“Laura.””

I didn’t sit.

“Why is he here?””

Daniel looked at Richard.

“Because he knows the truth.””

Richard nodded.

“That’s why I asked to be included.””

Michael pulled out a chair.

“Then start talking.””

Daniel looked at his son.

There was something different in his expression.

Regret.

Real regret.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

Michael crossed his arms.

“You’re right.””

Daniel swallowed.

“But you deserve the truth.””

I stayed silent.

For once, I wanted him to speak without me making it easier.

Daniel took a breath.

“When I left, I was already in trouble.””

Michael’s eyes narrowed.

“What kind of trouble?””

“My company was failing.””

Richard looked down.

“Daniel made bad investments.””

Daniel nodded.

“I thought I could fix it.””

I laughed quietly.

“You always thought you could fix everything.””

He looked at me.

“Yes.””

There was pain in his voice.

“And that was my biggest mistake.””

He continued.

“I was ashamed.””

“Of losing money?””

“Of losing control.””

The room went quiet.

Daniel looked at Michael.

“When I realized I couldn’t provide the life I promised, I panicked.””

Michael shook his head.

“You abandoned us because you were embarrassed?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty hurt more than another lie.

Richard spoke for the first time.

“Daniel was being pressured by investors. He thought if people knew his personal life was falling apart, his reputation would collapse.””

Michael looked at him.

“So he sacrificed us.””

Richard didn’t answer.

Because there was no defense.

Daniel leaned forward.

“I told myself I was leaving temporarily.””

I stared at him.

“But you never came back.””

“I know.””

“Why?””

His voice became quieter.

“Because every month I waited, it became harder.””

That was the cruelest part.

Not that he left.

That he kept choosing to stay away.

Day after day.

Year after year.

Daniel continued.

“Then I met Chloe.””

I looked away.

He noticed.

“I know what you think.””

“I don’t think anything.””

“That’s not true.””

I looked at him.

“Then tell me.””

He lowered his eyes.

“Chloe knew about my past.””

Michael looked confused.

“Meaning?””

“She knew I had a family.””

The room froze.

I stared at him.

“She knew?””

Daniel nodded.

“She knew from the beginning.””

Michael stood.

“Are you serious?””

Daniel looked ashamed.

“Yes.””

I felt something inside me crack.

Not because Chloe was innocent.

But because I realized the truth.

Everyone knew.

Everyone except me.

Daniel continued.

“She helped me rebuild my company.””

Richard added:

“She had connections.””

Michael looked disgusted.

“So she helped you become successful.””

Daniel nodded.

“But there was a condition.””

I frowned.

“What condition?””

Daniel looked at me.

“She wanted the past gone.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

Richard did.

“She wanted Daniel’s previous life erased.””

Michael looked at Chloe’s name in the documents.

The graduation.

The seat.

The letter.

Everything.

Then Daniel reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out a sealed envelope.

“I should have given this to you twenty years ago.””

He placed it on the table.

My name was written across the front.

Laura.

My hands froze.

“What is that?””

Daniel looked at me.

“It’s the letter I wrote the night I left.””

I stared at the envelope.

“Then why didn’t I receive it?””

Daniel’s face changed.

Because he knew the answer.

“Because Chloe destroyed it.””

The room went silent.

Michael immediately looked toward him.

“What?””

Daniel nodded.

“She took it from my car before I left.””

My heart raced.

“What did it say?””

Daniel pushed the envelope toward me.

“I don’t know.””

“You wrote it.””

“Yes.””

“But?””

Daniel looked at me.

“But I never got to send it.””

I touched the envelope.

Twenty years.

A missing letter.

A hidden truth.
