Daniel Carter looked nothing like the villain I had imagined.
That almost made it worse.
He wasn’t wearing a smug expression.
He wasn’t laughing.
He stood on our porch looking nervous, holding a small paper bag in one hand.
For a second, nobody spoke.
Then my father stepped outside.
“What are you doing here?””
Daniel looked past him.
His eyes landed on my mother.
“Nicole called me.””
My mother’s face went pale.
“I did not.””
Daniel frowned.
“You texted me twenty minutes ago.””
Dad turned slowly.
“Is that true?””
Nicole shook her head.
“No, Richard, I—”
Her phone buzzed.
Again.
Nobody needed to look.
Everyone already knew.
My father reached out his hand.
“Give me the phone.””
She didn’t move.
“Nicole.””
Slowly, she handed it over.
Dad looked at the screen.
A message thread was open.
The latest text was from her.
*Come now. He knows about the baby.*
My chest tightened.
She had called him after accusing me.
After humiliating me.
After making Dad question me.
Daniel looked uncomfortable.
“I didn’t know this was going to happen.””
My father stared at him.
“You knew she was pregnant.””
Daniel nodded.
“Yes.””
“How long?””
Daniel looked at Nicole.
She shook her head slightly.
But it was too late.
“Three months.””
My father laughed quietly.
A painful sound.
“Three months.””
I stood behind him, watching the man who had taught me how to ride a bike, how to drive, and how to never give up.
He looked completely lost.
“Richard,” my mother whispered.
He turned around.
“Don’t.””
The word was simple.
But my mother stepped back like he had shouted.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“I’m sorry.””
My father looked at him.
“Are you?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
That silence made everything worse.
My little brother came closer to me.
“Maya?””
I held his hand.
“It’s okay.””
But it wasn’t.
Nothing about that night was okay.
My mother had tried to make me carry the weight of her secret.
She had put my reputation, my future, and my relationship with my father at risk.
And I still didn’t understand why.
Dad looked at her.
“Why Maya?””
My mother stared at him.
“What?””
“Why did you choose her?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I didn’t want anyone to know.””
“So you blamed our daughter?””
“I thought if people believed it was hers, then—”
She stopped.
Dad’s expression changed.
“Then what?””
She looked away.
I felt my stomach twist.
Because suddenly I realized something.
This was never just about hiding a pregnancy.
It was about protecting herself.
My father stepped closer.
“You were willing to destroy your own daughter’s life to protect your secret.””
“I was scared.””
“You keep saying that.””
His voice cracked.
“But fear doesn’t make you hurt innocent people.””
My mother looked at me.
“Maya…”
I stepped back.
For the first time in my life, I didn’t want my mother to come near me.
Daniel looked at the ground.
“I should leave.””
Dad looked at him.
“No.””
Daniel stopped.
“I want you to stay.””
My mother looked shocked.
“Richard?””
“I want every person who knew the truth to hear it.””
The front door remained open.
The cold evening air entered the house.
Then my father pointed toward the table.
“Sit down.””
Nobody argued.
We all sat.
Even Daniel.
My father placed the pregnancy test in the center.
Then he placed the ultrasound appointment beside it.
“Now,” he said, “I want the entire truth.””
My mother took a deep breath.
“I was going to tell you.””
Dad stared at her.
“No more promises.””
She looked down.
Then she said something that made my entire body freeze.
“Daniel isn’t the only person who knows.””
My father frowned.
“What does that mean?””
My mother’s hands trembled.
“There’s another reason I panicked.””
I looked at her.
“What other reason?””
She didn’t answer me.
Instead, she looked directly at my father.
And whispered:
“Because the baby might not be Daniel’s.””
The room went completely silent.
Then Daniel’s face changed.
“Nicole…”
My father slowly stood up.
And before anyone could speak, someone knocked on the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Everyone turned.
My mother’s face went white.
Because she recognized the sound.
