Chapter 7: The Blood Test That Broke Us

Chapter 7: The Blood Test That Broke Us

The room went completely silent.

I stared at Dr. Collins.

Then at my mother.

Then at my father.

“No.””

The word came out before I even realized I had spoken.

“No, that’s impossible.””

Dr. Collins looked at me with sympathy.

“I understand why you feel that way.””

“No, you don’t.””

My voice cracked.

“You’re talking about my entire life.””

My father stepped closer to the table.

“What exactly are you saying?””

Dr. Collins opened the file.

“The genetic screening from Nicole’s pregnancy revealed a connection between the unborn baby and Maya.””

My father shook his head.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

“I agree. That’s why additional testing was recommended.””

My mother wiped her tears.

“I didn’t want to believe it either.””

I turned toward her.

“You knew?””

She looked away.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

“Maya…”

“How long?””

Her silence answered.

My chest tightened.

“How long did you know something was wrong?””

She whispered:

“Two weeks.””

I felt like the air had been knocked out of me.

Two weeks.

For two weeks, she had been carrying a secret that involved my identity.

And instead of telling me, she had accused me.

My father looked at her in disbelief.

“You knew your daughter’s life was being questioned, and you still kept this from us?””

“I was trying to understand.””

“No.””

His voice was sharper.

“You were trying to control the situation.””

My mother started crying.

“I was scared.””

Everyone kept saying that word.

Scared.

As if fear explained everything.

As if being afraid gave someone permission to hurt others.

I looked at Dr. Collins.

“What does the test actually mean?””

He sat down across from me.

“The first possibility is that the screening was affected by contamination or a laboratory error. That’s why we ordered confirmation.””

“And the second possibility?””

He hesitated.

My stomach dropped.

“The second possibility is that there is a biological relationship between you and the baby.””

I laughed nervously.

Not because it was funny.

Because my brain couldn’t accept it.

“I’m seventeen.””

“I know.””

“I’ve never been pregnant.””

“We know that.””

“Then how?””

Nobody answered.

My father looked at Nicole.

“Explain.””

My mother’s face turned pale.

“I don’t know.””

“You don’t know?””

“I swear.””

Dad walked away from the table.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

I watched him.

The strongest person I knew suddenly looked completely lost.

Then Ethan quietly walked into the room.

He had been standing in the hallway.

“Daddy?””

My father turned.

“What are you doing awake?””

Ethan held a stuffed animal against his chest.

“I heard everyone crying.””

My heart broke.

This was too much for a nine-year-old.

I walked over and hugged him.

“Go back upstairs, Ethan.””

“But Maya…”

“Please.””

He looked at me.

Then nodded.

Before leaving, he looked at Mom.

“Why does everyone keep having secrets?””

Nobody answered.

After he disappeared upstairs, the silence returned.

Then my father’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Again.

He answered.

“Hello?””

A woman’s voice came through.

I couldn’t hear what she said.

But I watched my father’s face change.

“What?””

He grabbed the edge of the counter.

“When?””

He listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

My heart started racing.

“What happened?””

He ended the call.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, he said:

“That was the lab.””

Dr. Collins stood.

“And?””

My father looked at me.

“The confirmation results are ready.””

My mother covered her mouth.

Dad walked toward the table.

“I didn’t want to hear it over the phone.””

He looked at Dr. Collins.

“Tell us.””

The doctor opened the envelope.

His eyes moved across the page.

Then he looked at me.

“Maya.””

I held my breath.

“The results confirm that the baby is genetically related to you.””

My knees almost gave out.

“That’s impossible.””

Dr. Collins nodded.

“Yes.””

Everyone stared at him.

“Yes?””

“Yes, because the relationship is not what we expected.””

My father frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Dr. Collins slowly placed the paper down.

“The baby is not related to Maya as a sibling.””

The room became colder.

“Then what?””

The doctor looked at my father.

“The results indicate the baby is connected to Maya through a close family line.””

My mother whispered:

“No.””

Dr. Collins looked at the report.

“Richard…”

My father stared.

“What?””

The doctor took a breath.

“The baby appears to share DNA with Maya because of a connection through her biological father.””

Nobody understood.

Until he said the next words.

“Maya’s biological father is not who she was raised to believe.””

I looked at my father.

The man who had taught me to ride a bike.

The man who held me when I cried.

The man I had always called Dad.

His face was frozen.

Because he knew.

Before I did.

My father whispered:

“Nicole…”

My mother broke down.
