Chapter 10: The Letter From My Real Father

My hands shook as I held the letter.

The paper was old.

Yellowed at the edges.

But the handwriting was steady.

A stranger’s handwriting from a man who had somehow been part of my life before I even knew he existed.

Everyone waited.

My father.

My mother.

Daniel.

The lawyer.

Even Dr. Collins, who had followed us to the office because he said the medical truth mattered.

I looked at my mother.

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

That hurt more than anything.

Because she already knew what was written inside.

I looked back at the letter.

And started reading.

*Maya,*

*If you are reading this, then the truth has finally reached you.*

*I wish I could have told you myself.*

My throat tightened.

Jonathan Reed.

My biological father.

A man I had never met.

A man who somehow knew I would one day need answers.

I continued.

*Your mother will tell you that she was protecting you. She will tell you that she was afraid. Some of that may be true.*

*But the reason she hid your identity was not because of a mistake from her past.*

*It was because of what she did afterward.*

I stopped.

My father noticed.

“What does it say?””

I looked at him.

“I don’t know if I want to keep reading.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my mother whispered:

“Maya…”

I looked at her.

“You knew.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I knew Jonathan left a letter.””

“That’s not what I asked.””

She looked down.

“Yes.””

The room went cold.

“How long?””

She swallowed.

“Since before you were born.””

I closed my eyes.

A part of me wanted to scream.

Another part of me was too tired.

I looked at the letter again.

*Nicole made a decision before Maya was born. A decision she believed would keep her safe. But it also took away Maya’s right to know who she was.*

My fingers tightened around the paper.

“What decision?””

My mother started crying.

“I was young.””

My father shook his head.

“Stop saying that.””

She looked at him.

“I was nineteen.””

“And you’re still using that to explain everything.””

She wiped her face.

“I thought I had no choice.””

I turned to her.

“What did you do?””

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then she whispered:

“I changed the records.””

The words barely registered.

“What?””

My mother looked at me.

“Your birth records.””

My father stepped forward.

“What did you change?””

She covered her mouth.

“I changed your father’s name.””

I stared at her.

“You erased him.””

She cried.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You were protecting yourself.””

Nobody corrected me.

Because nobody could.

I continued reading.

*Maya, your mother told people I abandoned her. She told them I disappeared. But that was not true.*

My heart stopped.

I looked up.

“What?””

My father grabbed the letter.

But I pulled it away.

No.

I needed to hear it myself.

*I tried to be part of your life. I sent letters. I called. I asked to see you.*

*Every time, Nicole refused.*

My mother whispered:

“I was scared.””

I looked at her.

“Of him?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“Then of what?””

She didn’t answer.

The lawyer slowly spoke.

“Jonathan hired me because he believed Nicole would eventually tell Maya.””

My father looked at him.

“She never did.””

Thomas shook his head.

“No.””

I looked down.

The letter continued.

*There is one more thing you need to know.*

*The reason your mother panicked when the pregnancy test was discovered was not because she was afraid of Daniel.*

I felt my heartbeat increase.

*She was afraid of the DNA results because she knew Daniel was connected to me.*

*And if anyone investigated Daniel’s family, they would eventually discover the truth about your birth.*

I looked at Nicole.

“You knew.””

She started crying.

“I didn’t know Daniel was Jonathan’s son.””

“But you knew someone could find out.””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

My father turned away.

The pain on his face was worse than anger.

Then Thomas reached into the drawer again.

“There’s another document.””

Everyone looked at him.

He placed a sealed envelope on the desk.

“This was the last thing Jonathan left.””

My mother stood immediately.

“No.””

The room froze.

Because she sounded terrified.

My father looked at her.

“You know what’s inside.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

But her voice betrayed her.

Thomas looked at me.

“This envelope was meant for Maya when she turned eighteen.””

I stared.

“Why am I getting it now?””

The lawyer looked at Nicole.

“Because someone tried to destroy it yesterday.””

My mother went pale.

“What?””

Thomas opened another file.

“There was an attempt to remove Jonathan’s documents from storage.””

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Who tried?””

Thomas looked directly at my mother.
