Chapter 14: The Last Recording

Chapter 14: The Last Recording

Jonathan’s face remained on the screen.

For a moment, nobody moved.

It was strange seeing him.

My biological father.

A man whose voice I had never heard.

A man who existed only through documents and secrets.

He looked directly into the camera.

Like he was speaking only to me.

“Maya, I don’t know how old you will be when you see this.””

His voice was calm.

“But I hope you are old enough to understand that adults make selfish choices.””

My mother started crying quietly.

Jonathan continued.

“I loved your mother once.””

Nobody spoke.

“But love does not always mean someone knows how to do the right thing.””

I looked at Nicole.

She lowered her head.

“I tried to stay in your life.””

Jonathan looked away briefly.

“Every time I tried, someone stopped me.””

The screen showed a stack of documents.

“Your mother changed the records. But she did not have the knowledge to do it alone.””

The room became silent.

My father looked at Michael.

Jonathan continued.

“Michael helped her.””

Michael closed his eyes.

“I know.””

Jonathan’s voice continued.

“At first, I was angry.””

I listened carefully.

“But later, I realized Michael was afraid.””

The video changed.

Jonathan looked tired.

“He believed keeping Maya away from me would protect her.””

I looked at Michael.

For the first time, I saw regret instead of excuses.

Jonathan continued.

“But the real danger was not me.””

The room froze.

“What?”” my father whispered.

Jonathan leaned closer to the camera.

“The person who threatened me was someone else.””

My heart started beating faster.

“I discovered that someone had been accessing my medical records.””

The screen flickered.

“I discovered someone was searching for information about Maya.””

My father leaned forward.

“Who?””

Jonathan’s voice became quieter.

“I never found out.””

Everyone stared.

Then he said:

“But I found evidence.””

The video showed a document.

A name.

My stomach dropped.

Because it wasn’t my mother.

It wasn’t Daniel.

It wasn’t Michael.

It was someone unexpected.

Richard Carter.

My father’s face went pale.

“What?””

The video continued.

“I found financial records connecting Richard Carter’s company to someone who wanted my silence.””

Nobody moved.

I looked at my father.

“Dad?””

He looked horrified.

“I don’t know what this is.””

Jonathan continued.

“I don’t believe Richard knew the truth.””

My father exhaled.

“He said my name.””

“But someone used his identity.””

The room changed.

The accusation disappeared.

Replaced by confusion.

Jonathan continued.

“If you are watching this, Richard, then I want you to know I never blamed you.””

My father looked away.

The recording continued.

“The person who arranged everything was someone close enough to use Richard’s name.””

The screen went dark.

Then one final video appeared.

A second recording.

Jonathan looked much more afraid.

“I found out who it was.””

Everyone leaned closer.

“My mistake was believing they would stop.””

He looked directly at the camera.

“Maya, the person who wanted you hidden was not trying to protect the family.””

A pause.

“They were trying to control it.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then my father stood.

“Someone used my identity.””

Michael nodded slowly.

“That’s what Jonathan believed.””

My mother looked terrified.

“I thought it was over.””

My father turned.

“You knew?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

Then her phone rang.

Everyone froze.

She looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

Nobody told her not to answer.

She did.

A voice came through.

And even though we couldn’t hear everything, we saw her face change.

“What?””

Silence.

Then:

“No.””

Another pause.

Her hand started shaking.

“What did you do?””

She dropped the phone.

My father picked it up.

The call had ended.

“What happened?””

My mother looked at me.

Her face was completely empty.

“The person who sent the messages…”

She swallowed.

“They have Ethan.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

My father grabbed his coat.

“Where is he?””

My mother looked down.

“There’s a message.””

She unlocked her phone.

One sentence.

*Bring Maya’s birth records to the old house if you want your son back.*

My father looked at me.

My blood ran cold.

Because whoever was behind this…

Didn’t want money.

Didn’t want revenge.

They wanted the truth buried.

Forever.
