Lionel Richie was closing out a high-energy night at The Muny when something changed. During his final song, the 77-year-old singer made an unexpected request.
The August 29, 2026, show in St. Louis had otherwise seen Richie power through his performance while speaking candidly about an issue that had rattled him during the tour.

Near the end of the concert, witnesses told TMZ that Richie appeared to be struggling. While performing “All Night Long,” he asked his team to bring him a chair so he could sit down.
Richie completed the show, but his remarks to the crowd revealed that he had already sought medical answers for what he was experiencing.
Richie Told Fans What Had “Shook” Him
Richie told the audience that problems during the tour had left him searching for an explanation.
“Some things have been happening on this tour that kind of shook me up a little bit, because I couldn’t figure out what the hell was going on,” Richie said, according to The St. Louis American.

During the show, Richie drank electrolytes and joked about their unpleasant taste. He also recalled that his fellow “American Idol” judge Luke Bryan had jokingly recommended alcohol as a way to stay hydrated.
After the concert, Richie sought further medical care. TMZ reported that he checked himself into a St. Louis hospital, where doctors were looking into possible “slight dehydration.”
It was similar to the diagnosis Richie said his own doctor had previously given him. After returning to the doctor for answers, Richie said he was told he was suffering from dehydration.

Sources told the outlet that Richie was being cautious and hoped to be discharged Tuesday. The news contrasted with how many attendees remembered the night, with several praising Richie’s energy and stage presence.
Concertgoers Praised Richie’s Command of the Stage
On Facebook, people who attended the concert described an energetic and entertaining performance. One netizen said, “Such a good show! He was funny too! Love knowing all the songs and they all were great!”
Another user shared, “It was a fantastic show! He still sounds and looks great and he was charming and personable! And then to see him at The Muny was perfect!”
A commenter wrote, “He was amazing, funny, commanded the stage.” Someone else remarked, “You did again, thank you.”

The Photos Captured Richie Hours Before His Hospitalization
The concert photos captured Richie at different points throughout the night. In one, he smiled broadly into a microphone while wearing a bright yellow jacket over a dark outfit. Another showed him with both arms extended as fiery visuals glowed behind him.
Wide shots revealed the large crowd at The Muny and the production surrounding Richie, including bright lights, large screens, and pyrotechnic effects. Quieter moments showed him seated at the piano, while other photos captured him performing alongside members of his band.

Richie had changed into a bright red jacket over an all-black outfit and initially moved around the stage with a microphone in hand. He gestured toward different parts of the crowd and extended his arms as the band played behind him.
Witnesses later told TMZ that Richie appeared to be struggling a bit toward the end of the show. At one point, Richie turned toward the side of the stage and appeared to signal for something.
A crew member soon brought out a black chair and positioned it behind him. Richie remained standing briefly before sitting down and continuing the performance.

Even while seated, he stayed engaged with the number. He sang into his microphone, raised an arm toward the audience, and was later joined closely by two band members playing guitar and bass.
Richie eventually returned to his feet. As the show ended, he could be heard repeatedly wishing the audience good night. He raised his arms toward the crowd, bowed, and then walked offstage.
Hospital News Put the Concert Reactions in a New Light
On another Facebook discussion, people responding to The Muny’s post praised Richie’s performance while expressing concern about what happened afterward.
One commenter wrote, “It was a great show! But sorry to hear he was hospitalized afterwards. Prayers for Lionel!” Another user said, “He still has his voice and put on a great show!”
Someone else remarked, “He put on a tremendous show, we were so impressed he had everyone up and dancin [sic]!”
Viewers commenting on footage from the concert also expressed concern about Richie’s condition during the performance.
One wrote, “You can tell he struggling in this performance… but I love his music. I love his voice… his energy.. but he is 77.. and I just want him to be OK!!! ❤️ you have given us so much great music thank you Lionel Richie!!”

The St. Louis Show Came After Richie’s Summer Tour
Richie had recently completed his 2026 “Sing a Song All Night Long” co-headlining tour with Earth, Wind & Fire before taking the stage in St. Louis. According to his Instagram post, the tour included stops across the United States and Canada from June 24 to August 14.
His August 29 appearance at The Muny was not part of the tour but a one-night-only concert promoted separately by the St. Louis venue on Facebook.
In the days between the tour and his St. Louis appearance, Richie also remained active on social media. Two days before the concert, he shared a heartfelt tribute to Dolly Parton, who died at age 80 on August 25. It was his last post on the platform before his hospitalization.
The post featured a photo of Richie and Parton together. He reflected on their time together, referenced her song “I Will Always Love You” and praised the lasting impact of her music.
The Muny Show Followed an Earlier Health Scare
Richie had also required medical attention during a concert earlier in the summer. During a June 24 concert at the Grand Casino Arena in St. Paul, Minnesota, Richie told the audience that he felt “dizzy” and “strange,” according to the same media outlet.
He sat on a stage platform while performing “Dancing on the Ceiling,” a high-energy part of his set that the publication reported he would not normally perform while seated.

Richie eventually cut the concert short. His saxophonist, Dino Soldo, told the audience that Richie was not feeling well and could not continue the show. Paramedics met Richie backstage and transported him by ambulance to a hospital as a precaution.
The following day, Richie’s wife, Brenda Harvey Richie, reassured fans in an X post: “Thanking everyone for their concern! Lionel is OK and will be back on the stage. ❤️❤️”

In another clip, others who attended the concert said they remained anxious for news. One fan asked, “I was in the audience, [sic] is there an update? Truly worried.” Another person commented, “I get dizzy just watching this. Too much going on with lighting and effects ect [sic].” A third wrote, “So scary.”
How Lionel Addressed It
In a post shared by Live Nation Chicago, Richie’s team confirmed that doctors had advised him to rest and recover fully. As a result, his June 26 show in Chicago and June 27 concert in Columbus, Ohio, were postponed.

Richie and Earth, Wind & Fire were expected to return to the stage on June 30 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
The Live Nation post also added that Lionel was “heartbroken” to postpone the two shows and “cannot wait to be back performing for his fans.”
The statement said new dates would be announced later. The United Center in Chicago also addressed the postponement on Facebook, noting that the decision had been made “Under advisement by doctors.”
Richie Once Thought He Might Lose His Voice Forever
The St. Paul health scare also recalled an earlier difficult period in Richie’s career. During the 1990s, he developed a mysterious illness that affected his vocal cords and underwent four separate surgeries before doctors determined that diet-induced acid reflux was causing the problem.
In an interview with People, Richie later described the experience as “about as close as you ever would’ve come to a nervous breakdown” because he feared he might never sing again. “You don’t want anybody fooling around down there. This is your identity,” he said, adding, “I never really thought that it would end.”
