I couldn’t move.
Rebecca’s words kept replaying in my head.
“The person who requested the custody change was not Tanya.””
A pause.
“It was signed by Nia’s biological mother.””
Imani.
The woman who had called me.
The woman who had warned me.
The woman who claimed she had been trying to protect our daughter.
My hand lowered slowly.
Tanya was still standing across the room.
Crying.
Not the controlled tears she had used before.
Real tears.
“You knew,” I whispered.
She shook her head.
“No.””
“You knew Imani was involved.””
“I knew she was involved years ago.””
I stared at her.
“And you never told me?””
Her face tightened.
“Because every time I tried to talk about Imani, you defended her.””
“That doesn’t answer my question.””
She looked down.
“Because I didn’t know who to believe.””
For a moment, I didn’t know what to say.
The woman who had hurt my daughter was standing in front of me.
But she was also telling me something I didn’t expect.
Something that made no sense.
I grabbed my jacket.
“I’m going to talk to Imani.””
Tanya stepped forward.
“Darius.””
I stopped.
“She’s going to tell you she had no choice.””
I looked back.
“Did she?””
Tanya’s silence answered for her.
I left.
The entire drive to Imani’s house felt unreal.
Every memory I had of the past few years was changing.
Every conversation.
Every argument.
Every moment where I thought someone was trying to hurt me.
Maybe they were all hiding something.
When I arrived, Imani opened the door.
The second she saw my face, she knew.
“What happened?””
I held up the document.
“Why did you sign this?””
Her expression changed.
She didn’t pretend.
She didn’t ask what I was talking about.
She just closed her eyes.
“Where did you get that?””
“Answer me.””
She stepped back.
“Come inside.””
“No.””
My voice shook.
“I spent years thinking you were trying to take Nia away from me.””
Imani looked hurt.
“I never wanted that.””
“Then why did you sign paperwork saying I should lose custody?””
She looked at the ground.
And then she whispered:
“Because I was trying to stop something worse.””
I stared at her.
“What does that mean?””
Imani sat down.
“I should have told you everything.””
“Yes.””
“I was afraid.””
“Afraid of what?””
She looked up.
“Tanya.””
I almost laughed.
“You expect me to believe Tanya forced you?””
“No.””
Imani shook her head.
“I expect you to believe that Tanya found out something about Nia before we did.””
My heart tightened.
“What?””
Imani opened a drawer and pulled out a folder.
“I found out Nia’s father had hidden financial problems before he disappeared from her life.””
I frowned.
“Nia’s biological father?””
She nodded.
“He left behind debts. Legal issues. People looking for him.””
I stared.
“What does that have to do with Tanya?””
Imani looked at me.
“Because Tanya knew about him.””
The room went silent.
“How?””
“She found old records before you married her.””
I felt a chill.
“Why would she care?””
“Because she thought someone from Nia’s past would come back.””
I shook my head.
“That doesn’t explain everything.””
“No.””
Imani’s eyes filled with tears.
“It doesn’t.””
She opened another folder.
Inside were copies of messages.
Old messages.
Between Tanya and someone named Evan.
I looked closer.
The dates were from before my wedding.
“What is this?””
Imani swallowed.
“Tanya was investigating Nia’s custody situation.””
I read the messages.
One said:
“Darius doesn’t know the full story.””
Another:
“Once he understands, he’ll see I’m protecting him.””
I looked up.
“Who is Evan?””
Imani hesitated.
“A private investigator.””
My stomach dropped.
“She hired someone?””
“Yes.””
“To investigate me?””
“No.””
Imani shook her head.
“To investigate Nia’s father.””
I looked back at the messages.
Something didn’t fit.
“Tanya wasn’t trying to erase Nia from my life.””
Imani looked away.
“No.””
“She was trying to protect her?””
“I think so.””
The words felt impossible.
Because I had spent days believing Tanya was a monster.
But monsters didn’t usually leave evidence proving they were afraid.
I stood up.
“Then why did she hurt Nia?””
Imani’s face changed.
“That’s the question you need to ask her.””
I walked toward the door.
Before I left, Imani spoke.
“Darius.””
I turned.
“She wasn’t lying about everything.””
I froze.
“What?””
Imani looked at me sadly.
“Tanya did something terrible.””
My chest tightened.
“But she didn’t start this.””
I stepped outside.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Rebecca.
A court file had been uploaded.
I opened it.
The newest document contained a statement from Evan, the investigator.
The title read:
*Evidence Regarding Nia’s Biological Father.*
And beneath it was one sentence:
“The child may be in danger because someone has returned.””
