I read the message until the words blurred.
Embryos.
My father had never mentioned fertility treatments, genetic testing, or anything remotely connected to how my daughters were conceived.
I had believed Sophie and Ruby were Olivia’s biological children and mine. The DNA test had confirmed Sophie was my daughter, and nothing had ever suggested otherwise.
Now an archived hospital report claimed she was not Olivia’s child.
Rachel stood beside me, gripping her purse so tightly that her knuckles had turned white.
“Did Olivia ever undergo fertility treatment?”” I asked.
Rachel nodded slowly.
“She and Elise both did.””
“Why?””
“Before you married Olivia, she was diagnosed with a condition that made carrying a pregnancy difficult. She wanted children desperately. Elise volunteered to help her explore treatment options.””
I stared at her.
“How?””
“Your wife and her sister were identical twins. They had nearly identical genetic profiles. Olivia believed that if she couldn’t carry a child herself, Elise might be able to donate eggs.””
I felt the room spin.
“Did she?””
“I don’t know. But your father funded a private fertility clinic outside Atlanta. He insisted the treatment remain confidential.””
I thought of my father’s endless generosity, his insistence on paying for everything, and the way he’d always treated family matters as business transactions.
“Why would he fund something like that?””
“Because he wanted an heir who could inherit the trust without complications. Your father had been warned that the trust could be challenged if you died without a legally recognized child. He wanted to control every possible outcome.””
I looked at Sophie.
She had stopped crying but still held my hand with both of hers.
“Can we go home now?”” she asked.
I kissed her forehead.
“Not yet, sweetheart. We have to make sure everyone is safe.””
Detective Harris arranged for the girls to be taken to a protected family services location with two officers. Rachel refused to leave them, and after checking her identity, Harris allowed her to accompany them.
I went to Martin’s office alone.
He was waiting in a conference room, surrounded by file boxes. His tie was loosened, and his eyes were bloodshot. He looked ten years older than he had the previous week.
“You came,” he said.
“Start talking.””
Martin placed an old cassette recorder on the table.
“Your father made this recording three days before he died. He told me to play it only if both girls were found.””
He pressed the button.
A hiss of static filled the room.
Then my father’s voice emerged, unmistakable and calm.
“Damien, if you’re hearing this, then the plan has failed. I need you to understand that everything I did was intended to protect the family.””
I gripped the edge of the table.
My father continued.
“Olivia discovered that Elise had been involved in a private fertility arrangement before their reunion. She believed the arrangement was connected to the trust. She was right.””
A pause.
“Years ago, I financed a research program designed to preserve the Cole bloodline. The clinic used genetic material from family members to create embryos. I believed I was protecting my son’s future.””
I felt nauseated.
“Your father authorized the creation of embryos using his own genetic material,” Martin said quietly.
“The clinic records suggest at least one embryo was implanted without the intended parents’ full consent.””
I stared at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means one of the girls may have been conceived using genetic material your father supplied.””
I couldn’t speak.
The recording continued.
“Olivia discovered the embryo records when she was pregnant. She threatened to expose the clinic and the trust. I panicked. I asked Victor to retrieve the records, but he decided the safest solution was to remove Olivia before she could reveal the truth.””
My father’s voice cracked.
“I told myself he wouldn’t hurt her. I told myself he would bring her back. I was wrong.””
For the first time, I heard genuine remorse in his voice.
“I did not order the girls separated. But I created the circumstances that made it possible. If you find Olivia, tell her I am sorry.””
The recording clicked off.
I sat in silence.
Martin poured himself a glass of water but didn’t drink it.
“Why didn’t you tell me this six years ago?”” I asked.
“Because your father threatened to revoke my position as trustee if I exposed the arrangement. I believed that if I waited, Olivia would be returned.””
“You helped conceal my wife’s disappearance.””
“Yes.””
“You watched me search for her.””
Martin bowed his head.
“Yes.””
I wanted to hit him.
Instead, I asked the question that mattered most.
“Where can I find the clinic records?””
Martin pushed a folder across the table.
“Dr. Samuel Price retired shortly after Olivia disappeared. He now lives in a gated community outside Savannah. I believe he kept copies of the original files.””
“Why?””
“Because your father paid him to remain silent, but Victor paid him to alter the records. Eventually, the two of them began threatening each other.””
I opened the folder.
A photograph of Dr. Price was clipped to the front.
Beneath it was an address.
I stood.
“I’m going to see him.””
Martin caught my arm.
“Damien, there’s something else. The hospital’s original DNA report was not the only test performed that night.””
I turned.
“What other test?””
“Your father ordered a private paternity test on both newborns. One result was delivered to him personally.””
“And the result?””
Martin swallowed.
“Ruby was biologically related to you.””
I stared at him.
“And Sophie?””
“The report was inconclusive. The sample was contaminated.””
My father’s recording had mentioned genetic material, embryos, and a hidden research program. Now the only clear result was that Ruby was my biological daughter.
But Sophie was the child I had raised, loved, and protected for six years.
She was my daughter in every way that mattered.
I took the folder and headed for the door.
Martin called after me.
“Damien, please. Your father left one final instruction.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Martin opened a drawer and removed a sealed envelope.
“This was addressed to Olivia. He told me never to deliver it unless you discovered that Elise had been involved.””
I took the envelope.
Inside was a single handwritten sentence.
The daughter who belongs to Elise is the only one Victor cannot afford to let live.
My blood ran cold.
I called Detective Harris.
“Get the girls moved immediately. Nobody tells Rachel where they’re going until you’ve verified her story.””
“What’s happened?””
“Someone has been hiding the truth about their birth.””
I heard movement on his end.
“Mr. Cole, we already moved them.””
“Where?””
A pause.
“Your home. Rachel insisted it was the safest place.””
My stomach dropped.
“Get them out of there!””
“Damien, what’s wrong?””
Before I could answer, I heard a scream through the phone.
Then a crash.
Then Sophie’s voice, distant and terrified.
“DADDY!””
The line went dead.
I ran for the elevator.
May you like
And as the doors closed, Martin shouted the words that followed me into the darkness.
“Damien, if Victor has the girls, he’ll use them to find the original embryo!””
