The entire ballroom went silent when a little girl in a filthy, torn dress walked through the golden doors.
Hundreds of wealthy guests turned to stare. Some whispered. Others looked at her with disgust. Nobody understood why a little girl, whose clothes were covered in mud and whose hair was a complete mess, had appeared at one of the city’s most exclusive charity parties.
But the little girl wasn’t looking at the guests.
She was searching for someone.
Her name was Lily. She was only five years old, and she had been carrying an old photograph in her tiny hands for as long as she could remember.
In that photograph was a smiling man holding a newborn baby.
Her father.
At least, that was what she had always believed.
Suddenly, Lily stopped walking.
Across the ballroom stood a handsome man wearing a perfectly tailored black suit. He was speaking with several important guests when he turned slightly toward the entrance.
Lily’s eyes widened.
She recognized that face.
Her little lips trembled.
“Daddy…?”
The man stopped talking.
For a moment, he thought he had imagined the voice. But when he turned around and saw the little girl standing there, his entire world seemed to collapse.
It was Lily.
His daughter.
The child he had been told was gone forever.
He immediately walked toward her, unable to control the tears forming in his eyes. When he reached her, he dropped onto his right knee.
“Baby girl…”
Lily stared at him, confused and frightened.
“You really Daddy?”
The man nodded, crying.
“I’m really Daddy.”
Lily looked at him for another moment before asking the question that shattered his heart.
“Daddy… Grandma said you died.”
Daniel couldn’t breathe.
He gently held her little hands.
“Who told you that, sweetheart?”
“Grandma Margaret,” Lily whispered. “She said you went away and never came back.”
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
He didn’t care about the expensive ballroom, the guests, or the important people watching them.
He only wanted to hold his daughter.
But as he hugged Lily, he noticed something in her hand.
It was an old photograph.
His photograph.
The same photograph he had kept inside his wallet for five years.
And on the back, someone had written four words:
“Never let her find him.”
Daniel slowly lifted his head.
Who had been keeping his daughter away from him?
And why?
