Daniel spun around, but Emily had disappeared.
Only Lily remained beside the bedroom door.
“Was that really Mommy?” he asked.
Lily nodded.
“She comes when the house gets quiet.”
Daniel approached the mirror. His reflection stared back at him, pale and exhausted.
Then another figure appeared behind his reflection.
Emily.
Her lips moved, but no sound came out.
Daniel leaned closer.
Suddenly, the mirror fogged over.
Four words appeared on the glass.
“Find the blue notebook.”
Before Daniel could react, the bedroom lights flickered.
The mirror cracked from top to bottom.
Lily began crying.
“He’s coming back!”
“Who is coming back?”
She pointed toward the staircase.
A man’s footsteps echoed through the house.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Daniel grabbed Lily and hurried into the hallway. At the bottom of the stairs stood a tall figure wearing a black coat.
The stranger lifted his face.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
It was his older brother, Michael.
But Michael had died in a car accident three years earlier.
And he was smiling.
