Keith Urban was already singing about a love that got away when the mood at his Atlantic City concert took an unexpectedly emotional turn. The song’s storyline was strikingly familiar — and what happened minutes later has only made the performance more intriguing.
Keith Urban, 58, performed at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City on Friday, August 22, where he introduced fans to the story behind one of the songs on his latest album.
In exclusive footage obtained by the Daily Mail, the country singer explained the story behind “We Go Back,” describing it as a tale about a man and woman who grew up together in a small town.
A Song About the One Who Got Away
“This song is about a guy and a girl growing up in a small town,” Urban told the crowd. The pair, he explained, “grew up” together and were among the first of their friends to fall in love.
They had what sounded like a promising relationship, until the man made a mistake. “They had a good thing going, until the guy screwed it up,” Urban said, before adding a remarkably candid line: “I will do that.”

Years Pass, But the Feelings Don’t
Urban continued the story by explaining that years pass before the former couple unexpectedly crosses paths again. The man cannot believe what he sees when he encounters the woman, according to Urban’s description. She looks the same, and the two begin talking as though the years between them have somehow disappeared.
But there is one problem. “She tells him she’s got somebody else,” Urban explained. That detail sets up the emotional core of “We Go Back,” a song featured on Flow State, Urban’s yacht rock covers album that includes the track as its sole original song.
And the chorus leaves little ambiguity about how deeply the narrator regrets what happened. Urban sang about realizing he should never have let the woman go, admitting that he was “young and dumb” and had “messed it all up bad.”
The woman has moved on, but the narrator insists that what they shared is something her new relationship can never replicate.

Then Urban’s Mood Suddenly Changed
Urban continued performing after “We Go Back,” moving through several more songs before something appeared to shift. At one point, the singer crouched down onstage and appeared to wipe away a tear as he looked out at the sold-out Atlantic City crowd.
Fans responded with cheers and applause. Urban looked down with a small smile and shook his head before grabbing the microphone and taking in the moment again.
“This is why we keep coming back to Atlantic City,” he told the crowd. His band was already playing instrumental music in preparation for his next track.

Urban has not said that “We Go Back” was written about Kidman, and there is no indication that the emotion he displayed was connected to the song or his former marriage. Still, the timing was striking. The moment comes against the backdrop of Urban and Kidman’s divorce, which was finalized in January 2026 after 19 years of marriage.
The Timing Brings Kidman Into Focus
The former couple, who married in 2006, share two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret. Kidman filed for divorce in Nashville in September 2025, with irreconcilable differences cited in the finalized divorce.
The timing became even more striking last month, when Kidman was photographed in Italy with private equity businessman Michael Reinstein. According to the Daily Mail’s report, Kidman was seen sitting poolside on the Italian Riviera with Reinstein while sipping an Aperol Spritz.
A source close to Kidman told the publication, “After everything she went through with Keith, she deserves to find happiness.” The insider also said, “She never thought her marriage wouldn’t work out and she tried as best as she could to keep her family intact.”
“Her daughters are her best friends, and she seems really content in her life. She’s so easy to get along with and kind. She keeps her personal life extremely private.”
But the photographs are only part of the story. Kidman has also spoken about what it has actually felt like to lose the future she once expected to have.

Kidman Admitted She Never Expected This Life
In her British Vogue cover story, Kidman reflected on finding herself in a future she never expected. When asked how she would describe this period of her life, she initially considered phrases such as “Free falling?” and “Jumping off?” before settling on a much simpler question:
“Like, where am I going? And what’s next?”
She acknowledged that the past year had not been easy because the life she imagined for herself did not turn out as planned.
“But at the same time I’m like, ‘OK, I didn’t expect this. I had a different view of what my life was going to be, but this is what it is now.’ You make all these plans, and you have all these ideas of what it’s all going to be like, and then it’s… not. You have to adjust. You adapt. The future, it’s completely unknown to me right now.” She paused, then added, “Strange.”
During the interview, Kidman also admitted that, “There was a point where I was very fearful and deeply vulnerable, which is exposing. And then at the same time [I’m] going,” she said. “Well, I can either really not confront it and just curl up, or I can just go forward with an enormous amount of hope.”
She went on, “It requires time, and I have had so many older women in my life who are incredible mentors,” she says. “I had my mother, and then I have another woman who sort of helped raise me since I was 16.”
“Part of the way they approach life was sometimes [to say to me]: ‘Nicole, you just got to take it on the chin.’ Once you accept that, instead of going, ‘Well that’s not fair or it’s unjust,’ you go, ‘Well, yes, actually it isn’t fair. Because things are not fair,” she added.

Kidman was also asked whether having experienced a highly publicized divorce before had given her any useful preparation for navigating another major breakup.
She Says Every Breakup Feels Completely New
Her reaction was immediate. “It’s all new.” When asked if she meant every time, she laughed and replied, “Every time!” Rather than suggesting that age or experience had made this particular transition easier, Kidman emphasized that she is still learning how to handle whatever life puts in front of her.

“I’ve approached my whole life like that,” she said of her tendency to lead with her feelings. “That’s just who I am. I don’t overthink things, and I’m probably not that analytical.”
“I’m far more feeling-centered, and I lead with my heart. I just go, ‘OK, what do I feel here? I’ll give it a go.’ It throws people, because I think they think I’ll be far more measured and I’m not,” she continued.

She said she wants to continue living with an openness to mistakes, failure, love and possibility.
“I can still approach things intellectually,” she continued, “but my desire is not to be ruled by my head. I’ve always wanted to live a well-examined life, so what does that entail? Trying things, making mistakes, failing, getting back up, moving on, embracing love, staying open, keeping the heart open and the possibilities.”

Her Children Remain at the Center of Everything
For all the uncertainty surrounding her personal life, Nicole Kidman made one thing clear: her children remain her priority. She described family as “an extraordinary purpose” and said everything else becomes secondary when it comes to her children.
Her message to them is simple and reassuring. “‘It’s OK, we’re here. You’ve got people who love you, who are going to hold your hand and get through it.'”
