Vanessa unlocked her phone and scrolled through a series of messages.
Emily stood motionless, one hand resting on the stroller handle. Her babies had finally stopped crying, but she could barely hear anything beyond the pounding of her own heart.
Vanessa turned the screen toward her.
The messages were between Vanessa and Daniel.
At first, Emily saw ordinary conversations. Then she noticed the dates.
The messages went back almost four months—before Daniel had even left for his overseas job.
One message caught her attention.
Daniel: Emily suspects nothing. Just keep everything quiet until I get back.
Emily’s lips parted.
She scrolled further.
Another message appeared.
Vanessa: What about the children? You can’t keep pretending they don’t exist.
Then Daniel’s reply:
Daniel: I’ll take care of them financially. I just don’t want my life tied down anymore.
Emily felt as if the floor had disappeared beneath her feet.
She looked up at her husband.
“Is this real?”
Daniel reached for the phone.
“Those messages are being taken out of context.”
Vanessa pulled it away.
“Stop it! You’ve been lying to everyone. You told me your marriage was already over. You said Emily knew you wanted a divorce.”
Emily shook her head slowly.
“You told her we were getting divorced?”
Daniel remained silent.
Vanessa wiped her eyes.
“He told me that you were only staying together for the children. He said you both agreed to separate after he returned.”
Emily felt sick.
For months, she had been counting down the days until Daniel came home. She had saved money to buy him a special anniversary gift. She had even planned a small family dinner to celebrate his return.
Meanwhile, he had been preparing a completely different future.
“Why?” she whispered.
Daniel finally looked at her.
“I was unhappy, Emily.”
The words hurt more than she expected.
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
“I didn’t know how.”
“So you decided to lie to me instead?”
He looked away.
Vanessa lowered her phone.
“I believed him,” she said quietly. “I thought you knew. I didn’t realize he was telling us two different stories.”
Emily wanted to hate Vanessa. Part of her did. Vanessa had still chosen to kiss a married man, knowing that he had a wife and children.
But Daniel had made a choice, too.
He had looked his wife in the eyes during countless video calls and promised that he couldn’t wait to come home.
Emily glanced down at Noah and Olivia.
They were innocent. They deserved love, stability, and a father who didn’t treat their family like an inconvenience.
She wiped her tears.
“I’m taking my children home.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“Emily, wait. We can fix this.”
She looked at him one final time.
“You didn’t destroy our marriage with one kiss, Daniel. You destroyed it with every lie you told me before it.”
Then she turned and walked away.
But Daniel wasn’t ready to let her go.
And what he said next would force Emily to make the hardest decision of her life.
