Richard carefully examined the little teddy bear.
He remembered the symbol immediately.
It was the same symbol his younger sister Emily had embroidered onto her favorite toys when she was a child.
Richard looked at Elena.
“Did your mother ever tell you why she kept this teddy bear?”
Elena shook her head.
“She only told me that it was precious and that I should never throw it away.”
Richard smiled sadly.
“My sister Emily gave that teddy bear to your grandmother. She used to give her toys to children who didn’t have much.”
Elena’s eyes filled with tears.
“So my mother kept it all these years?”
Richard nodded.
“She must have treasured it.”
Sophie looked up at him.
“Does that mean Mr. Buttons is special?”
Richard smiled and gently nodded.
“Very special, sweetheart.”
Then he looked at Elena.
“I want to apologize if my family ever made your mother feel forgotten. She was part of our home, and I should have known more about the people who helped us.”
Elena wiped her tears.
“She never expected anything from your family, sir. She just wanted to help people.”
Richard looked at Sophie.
“Would you like to sing that beautiful song again?”
Sophie looked at her mother.
Elena smiled and nodded.
The little girl slowly began to sing the familiar lullaby.
Her tiny voice filled the elegant ballroom.
The guests became quiet.
Richard stood still, listening with tears in his eyes.
For the first time in many years, he felt close to his sister again.
When Sophie finished, the room filled with applause.
Richard walked over and gently smiled at her.
“Your voice is a gift, Sophie. Never be afraid to share it.”
Sophie hugged her teddy bear and smiled.
“Thank you, Mr. Richard.”
Richard turned toward Elena.
“Your daughter deserves every opportunity to follow her dreams. If you allow it, I’d like to help her get music lessons and support her education. No pressure, and no conditions.”
Elena couldn’t hold back her tears.
“Thank you, sir.”
Richard looked at Sophie one last time.
“Keep singing, little one. The world deserves to hear your voice.”
And that night, a little girl who thought nobody would notice her became the most unforgettable guest at the party.
